WallMates
WallMates Story
WallMates began with a simple problem I kept running into as a climber.
I met many people at the gym, but finding a compatible climbing partner was surprisingly challenging. While climbing ability mattered, the best partnerships often depended just as much on schedules, life stages, interests, energy levels, and goals.
I first fell in love with climbing while working in academia in the Midwest and raising my young daughter. Some days, even 30 minutes at the university climbing wall felt like a gift before daycare pickup. Later, after moving to the Bay Area, I found a welcoming climbing community and made many friends through Movement Sunnyvale.
Like many adults balancing work, family, and other commitments, I often found myself fitting climbing into small windows of time. Over time, I realized that many climbers were looking for the same thing. Parents wanted partners who climbed around family schedules. Working professionals were seeking reliable weekday partners. New climbers wanted someone patient to learn with, while experienced climbers were looking for regular partners for training and outdoor trips.
The challenge was not a lack of people. The challenge was making the right connections.
I created WallMates as a community project to help solve that problem.
Rather than focusing only on climbing grades, WallMates helps people connect through a broader picture of who they are: their climbing style, schedule, interests, and goals.
My vision is not to build another social network, but to strengthen the connections that already exist right here in our gym.
At its heart, WallMates is about moving beyond simply sharing a wall. It's about finding the rhythm, trust, and shared experiences that turn a casual belay into a lasting partnership.
Happy Climbing!
